Paula De Stefanis
Painting, wearables, mixed media
Paula works by doing a series of paintings with the same concept running through each piece. This allows her to explore approaches in the work. As the artist making the work, the unpredictability and potential sense of discovery is very exciting for her. In acrylic, most of her canvases are geometrical and architectural. In oils she is especially drawn to the the distressed patterns in the buildings of the mediterranean, mainly Italy. She is drawn to the natural break down of wood and metals both in nature and in urban settings. Many layers go into these paintings. She uses unconventional tools to create the textures, often taking away paint as well.
She has always subscribed to the theory of “paint for paint’s sake” by celebrating the physical qualities of the medium while including the images or textures that move her. Her goal is to create stunning pieces of art that will engage the viewer and foster a dialogue that is invigorating, educational and rewarding.
